Prayers for forgiveness and guilt
For what you did, for what was done to you, and for the shame that stays long after both. Confession is meant to put something down, not to pick it up again.
Guilt rarely arrives at a convenient hour. It turns up in the middle of an ordinary afternoon, about something you did eleven years ago, with nothing useful attached to it. Or it sits on your chest at four in the morning while you go over one conversation again, looking for the version where you came out of it better.
Some of what follows is for the thing you did. Some is for the thing done to you, which you are now being told to forgive, sometimes by people who were not there. Some is for the shame that outlasts both, the kind that has stopped being about any particular event and has become a low opinion of yourself that you take to work.
You do not have to work out which one you are in before you start. Begin anywhere on this page.

Naming it before I lose my nerve
Here it is. I have been carrying this around and calling it something else. I am not going to dress it up now. This is what I did, God. I am telling you plainly, before I lose my nerve and put it away for another year.
One line, when that is all
God, I did it. You already know. I am saying it anyway.
