For the season where nothing seems to be leading anywhere. These prayers ask for the next step rather than the whole map.

Maybe you are good at your job and it means nothing to you. Maybe you are between jobs and the days have lost their edges. Maybe you have been faithful for years in a church, a home, a ward, and you have started to wonder quietly what any of it was for.

The question rarely arrives as a crisis. It turns up on a Tuesday, in the car park, before you go back in.

We cannot tell you what you are for. Nobody can hand you that. What we can do is give you words for the asking, and be honest that the asking often goes on longer than anyone admits. The prayers below are short on purpose. Say one, or say part of one, and go back to whatever is waiting for you.

When you cannot see ahead

For the stretch where you have no idea what comes next, only that something has to. These are for the morning you cannot picture, and for the waiting that has already gone on too long.

The next step, not the map
God, I am not asking to see the whole of it. Show me the one thing I am meant to do tomorrow morning, and let that be enough for tomorrow morning. I will come back for the day after when it comes.

When nothing has opened at all
Lord, I have knocked at everything I know how to knock at, and nothing has moved. I am not going to pretend I understand that. Keep me from forcing something open just to stop the waiting.

Who am I, that I should go to Pharaoh, and that I should bring the children of Israel out of Egypt?

Exodus 3:1–12

Moses is keeping somebody else's sheep at the back of the wilderness when this happens. He is not looking for a commission. When it comes he argues, and the question he asks is the one most people ask. Notice what God answers with. Not a description of Moses or a list of his strengths, but a promise to go with him.

Speak; for your servant hears.

1 Samuel 3:1–10

This is often used to teach a technique for hearing God. Read it again and it undercuts that. Samuel does not recognise the voice. He gets it wrong three times and needs an old man, half blind, to tell him what is happening. If you cannot tell whether you have heard anything, you are in the story, not outside it.

Before I formed you in the womb, I knew you. Before you were born, I sanctified you.

Jeremiah 1:4–10

These words get lifted out and handed to anyone who will hold still, as proof that a specific blueprint exists for every life and that you might miss it. That is not what is happening here. This is one man's commission to a public role he tried to refuse on the spot. What it does say is that God knew him before he had done anything at all. That much is for everyone.

He has shown you, O man, what is good. What does the LORD require of you, but to act justly, to love mercy, and to walk humbly with your God?

Micah 6:6–8

The passage opens with a question that escalates into panic. What should someone bring, more offerings, more sacrifice, more of themselves. The answer names no career and no ministry. It describes how to live, and it can be done from a call centre, a ward, a kitchen or a prison cell. If you want a purpose you can start this afternoon, it is here.

Matthew 22:34–40

Jesus is asked to rank the whole law and gives two commands that between them cover a life. Neither is a job title. When people talk about finding their purpose they usually mean a role, and this answers at a different level: whatever the role turns out to be, this is the work inside it. It also means no role can be a wasted one.

You didn’t choose me, but I chose you and appointed you, that you should go and bear fruit, and that your fruit should remain

John 15:1–17

Fruit language gets turned into output, and then into pressure. In the passage it is the opposite. The branch is not told to produce, it is told to stay attached, and the fruit follows from that. The passage does have hard lines in it, about a branch that is taken away and branches that are gathered and burnt, and it is better to meet them here than to come on them alone. Read in the same logic, they describe a branch that has come away from the vine, not a branch with a poor yield. If you are measuring your life by what you have produced this year, this is a passage that quietly refuses to score you.

Don’t be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, so that you may prove what is the good, well-pleasing, and perfect will of God.

Romans 12:1–8

The phrase perfect will of God has done a lot of damage, read as a single hidden plan you could walk past. Paul is not describing a treasure hunt. The testing happens in a renewed mind over time, and the verses straight after it are about ordinary gifts used in an ordinary body of people. The discernment Paul describes here is slow and communal. It is not the only way God has called people, as the bush in Exodus shows, but it is the one this passage teaches.

For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared before that we would walk in them.

Ephesians 2:8–10

This one is worth reading with the two verses before it, which insist none of this is earned. So the good works are not a quota. Note the verb: walk in them. Not find them, not achieve them. It suggests something more like a road already under your feet than a secret you have to guess.

Questions people ask

How do I know if it is God calling me or just me wanting something?

Honestly, most of the time you will not know with certainty, and anyone who promises you a clean test is overselling it. What people who have walked this well tend to do is slow down, talk to two or three people who know them and are not impressed by them, look at what the work would ask of others, and check whether the pull is towards love or away from it. Then they decide, and stay open to being wrong.

What if I have already missed my calling?

This fear does a lot of quiet damage, and it assumes something the Bible does not obviously teach: that there was one right door and it has shut. The passages above describe people called in the middle of ordinary work, most of them badly prepared. If you have made a decision you regret, that is a real loss and worth grieving. It is not the end of your usefulness.

Does God have one specific plan for my life?

Christians genuinely disagree about this, and it is worth knowing that rather than being told one answer. Some traditions hold that God directs the details. Others read Scripture as giving a clear shape for a life, love of God and neighbour, honest work, mercy, and freedom within that. Both can be held faithfully. What almost nobody in either camp thinks is that God hides the answer and punishes you for not finding it.

Is it wrong to take a job just for the money?

No, and framing it that way can make an honest decision feel shameful. Paying rent and feeding people is not a lesser motive, it is part of loving the people who depend on you. The question worth asking is not whether money features, but what the job would cost you and them over years, and whether you could still be the person you want to be while doing it.

I am ill and cannot work. What is my purpose?

We are not going to hand you a tidy answer to that, because it deserves better. What we can say is that none of the passages above make usefulness the condition of being loved, and the one that describes what God requires asks for justice, mercy and humility, not output. If your days are small, they are still yours, and they still count. Practical help matters too, so keep your medical team in this.
