Prayers for work and finding a job
For the interview, the application that went nowhere, and the Monday you cannot face. Your job is not your worth, but losing one still hurts.
Work takes up most of the daylight hours of most weeks of a life, so when it goes wrong there is nowhere to put it down. You check the inbox again at eleven at night. You rehearse the answer you should have given. You do the sums for the third time and get the same figure.
Some of what follows is for people who were told this morning. Some is for people who have been looking for a year and have stopped saying out loud how many applications they have sent. Some is for people whose job is fine on paper and is quietly taking something out of them.
Say the ones that fit. Skip the rest. You do not have to pray your way into feeling better about it first.

The night before an interview
For the hours between preparing and going in, when you have read the job description so often the words have stopped meaning anything and you still cannot picture the room.
Before I go in
God, I have done what I could with the time I had. Go in with me. Let me be able to think. If my voice shakes, let it shake. Whatever is said in that room, I am still yours when I come out of it.
When I want it too much
I want this one, and wanting it this much has made me strange. I keep performing the conversation in my head at two in the morning. Hold the wanting for me for a few hours so that I can sleep.
At the door, hands cold
God, my hands are cold and my mind has gone blank. Be here.
After the interview is over
It is done and I cannot take any of it back. The question I fumbled is still going round. Take it off me. I will not know anything for days, and I would rather not spend those days like this.
When the job has gone
For the day the meeting was six minutes long and the laptop had to go back, and for the weeks after it, when the mornings turn out to be the hard part.
The day I was told
I was told this morning and I have not said it out loud to anyone yet. I do not know how to tell them at home. God, I am not asking you to make this make sense today. Only do not let me be on my own with it tonight.
It was not my failure
The team was cut, not me, and I still feel like I failed. I know the difference. I cannot make myself believe it. Keep telling me the truth about this until some of it goes in.
Rent due on the second
The rent is due on the second and I have counted what is left more times than counting helps. God, I am asking you plainly. Provide for us. Show me what to do this week, and who I can bring myself to ask.
Monday with nowhere to be
It is Monday and I have nowhere to be. This is hard. Stay.
When the applications go nowhere
For the sixtieth application, the rejection that arrives at seven in the morning, and the people who have quietly stopped asking how the search is going.
Another two line rejection
Another one. Two lines, and they had my name wrong. God, I am tired of being nearly right for things. Keep me from turning bitter about it, because I can feel that starting.
When I have stopped hoping
I used to pray about this with some heat in it. Now I send them off and expect nothing back. I am telling you that rather than pretending otherwise. Meet me somewhere in the middle of it.
Nothing left to say
God, I have nothing left to say about it. Here I am anyway.
The Monday you cannot face
For the job that pays the bills and takes more than it gives back, and for the Sunday evening that has started to arrive like a weight on the chest.
Getting through one more today
God, I do not need this fixed by nine o'clock. I need to get through today without becoming someone I would not want to be. Help me do the work in front of me, and to leave it there when I go.
The person I dread seeing
There is a person I dread seeing and I have run out of charitable thoughts about them. I am not going to pretend otherwise in front of you. Give me what I need to be decent anyway, and the clear head to know whether this is something I should be reporting.
Answering emails in bed again
I answered emails in bed again. Nothing bad happens if I stop, and I still cannot stop. Teach me how to put it down. Give me the sleep you give to the people you love.
Sunday night, alarm set
The alarm goes in six hours. God, be there in the morning.
When it is someone you love
For the partner who is job hunting, the friend who was let go last month, the grown child who is not sleeping. For watching it happen and not being able to fix it.
For the one job hunting
They have gone quiet in the evenings and I cannot reach them. God, be nearer to them than I can get. Keep me from saying something useful and wrong. Do not let this become the thing that comes between us.
For a friend let go
You know what they have not told anybody. Carry the part they cannot say out loud. And show me something to do that is an actual help, not just the thing that would make me feel better for having done something.
When I still have work
I am the one still in a job and I have stopped knowing how to talk about my day. Keep me from being careless with them. Keep me grateful without making a performance of it.
Bible verses about work and employment
What each passage meant where it was written, and what it does and does not offer you now.
I have filled him with the Spirit of God, in wisdom, and in understanding, and in knowledge, and in all kinds of workmanship
Exodus 31:1–6
The first person in the Bible described as filled with the Spirit of God is not a prophet or a priest. He is a craftsman, named in the records for his work in gold and stone and wood. Skill at a bench is treated here as holy work. Worth sitting with if you have absorbed the idea that only church jobs are real callings.
May the LORD repay your work, and a full reward be given to you from the LORD, the God of Israel, under whose wings you have come to take refuge.
Ruth 2:2–12
Ruth is a widow and a foreigner picking up what the harvesters dropped. Gleaning was the welfare system of the time, a legal right rather than a favour, and Boaz blesses her without a hint that she should be ashamed of it. If you are claiming benefits, or doing work far below what you trained for, this passage has your situation inside it.
Let the favour of the Lord our God be on us. Establish the work of our hands for us. Yes, establish the work of our hands.
Psalm 90:12–17
The lines before this are the bleakest in the psalms about how short a life is, and then it asks God twice for the same thing, the way people do when they are not sure they were heard. It is a prayer that something you made outlasts you. Notice that it is a request. The psalm does not tell you it will be granted.
It is vain for you to rise up early, to stay up late, eating the bread of toil, for he gives sleep to his loved ones.
Psalm 127:1–2
This gets read as a rebuke to ambition, and it gets quoted at people working two jobs because they have to. It is about anxious overwork, the kind you do because stopping feels dangerous, not about anyone earning a living. The line about sleep is a kindness being offered, not a standard you have failed to meet.
Where these verses get misused
Verses about work get used as weapons more than most. The proverbs about diligence are general observations, not a verdict on why your role was cut. The line about anyone unwilling to work was written about people who had chosen to stop, not about anyone sending applications into silence. If somebody has quoted these at you, or you have quoted them at yourself at four in the morning, you are allowed to put them down. Losing work is not a punishment, not a lesson you failed to learn, and not evidence that your faith is thin.
Questions people ask
- Is it wrong to pray for a specific job?
- No. The psalms ask God for specific material things constantly, including bread, rescue, and the failure of their enemies. Asking plainly for the job you are interviewed for on Wednesday is honest prayer. What we would avoid is bargaining, offering God something in exchange, or reading the outcome as a verdict on whether you asked well enough or believed hard enough. You can want it out loud and still admit you do not know how it will go.
- I have prayed over every application and heard nothing. Is that God saying no?
- Nobody can tell you that, and we would be careful with anyone who says they can. Silence in a job search is usually an overloaded inbox and a hiring freeze rather than a message. Scripture has long stretches where faithful people get no answer and keep going anyway. Keep applying, take the practical advice of people who know your industry, and keep praying, without treating the wait as a code you have to crack.
- Should I leave a job that is making me ill?
- That is a decision for you, the people who depend on you, and where it applies your doctor. Prayer is not a substitute for any of them. What prayer can do is slow the panic enough for you to think, and help you separate what you can change from what you cannot. If your health is suffering, please speak to your GP, and to your union if you have one. Taking the practical help is not a failure of trust.
- Does God have one right career for me, and can I miss it?
- Christians disagree about this in good faith. Some traditions speak of a specific calling for each person, others of real freedom to choose well among things that are good and useful. Either way, most people arrive at their work through some mixture of skill, need, circumstance and other people's decisions. We would not tell you that one wrong turn has cost you the life you were meant to have.
One thing, and then stop reading. Pick whichever prayer above came closest, and say it out loud once, badly if necessary, in the car or standing at the kettle. Then do the next small ordinary thing that is in front of you. You do not have to feel any different for that to have counted.
