Prayers for your children and family
For the child you are worried about, the one who will not speak to you, and the ordinary school run. Praying for someone is not the same as controlling them.
Most parents pray badly and constantly. A few words in the car. A sentence at two in the morning after you have checked your phone again. Something under your breath outside the school gate that you would be embarrassed to say out loud.
That is prayer. It counts. You do not need to sit down properly first, and you probably will not get the chance.
What follows is short enough to say while you are doing something else. Some of it is for a child you are frightened for. Some is for the days when nothing is wrong and you are worn out anyway. None of it will tell you that praying harder produces a particular kind of child.

When you are frightened for them
For the parent whose child is ill, or in trouble you cannot fix from where you are standing. These are for the middle of the night and the corridor outside the ward.
The middle of the night
God, I am awake again with the worst version of this in my head. I do not know how to hand them over to you and keep loving them at the same time. Hold my child tonight. Hold me. Let me sleep.
For a child I cannot protect
You know where they are tonight. I do not. I have done what I can and it was never going to be everything. Keep them. And keep me from making my fear into one more thing they have to carry.
