Prayers for when you feel worthless
For the voice that tells you what you are worth. These prayers do not argue with it. They put something truer next to it.
You know the voice. It has your own accent. It turns up when you make a small mistake at work, or see a photograph of yourself, or lie down at the end of the day, and it has a very clear account of what you are worth.
Being told the voice is lying does not usually stop it. Neither does listing your good qualities. Most of us have tried both, several times, and the voice absorbs the argument and carries on.
So these prayers do something smaller. They say what is true within earshot of it, they let you be honest about the state you are in, and they do not ask you to feel any different first. Say the short ones if the short ones are all you have got. Nobody is marking them.

When the voice starts up again
The running commentary that starts while you are washing up or answering an email. It does not need an event to set it off. These are for saying under your breath while it is going.
The commentary will not stop
It is going again. The same list, the same voice, the same verdict. I am not asking you to argue with it tonight. I am asking you to stay in the room while it talks, and to be the last one speaking.
When there are no words
God. I am here. That is all I have. Stay.
Louder than my own head
You have heard what I have been telling myself all day. Every word of it. Say something truer, and say it slowly enough that I catch it.
I do not believe it yet
People keep telling me that you love me and I cannot make it land, Lord. I am not going to pretend otherwise. Hold this for me, since I cannot. Keep saying it while I am still unable to hear it, and do not go quiet because I am slow.
When you cannot look at yourself
For when shame has moved from something you did to something you are. The mirror, the photograph, the memory that arrives just as the day was getting bearable.
The face in the mirror
God, I looked at myself this morning and felt sick. You made this body and you have not walked away from it. Help me stay in it today without contempt. Today only. I am not asking for more than that.
Shame that became a name
I have stopped saying I did a bad thing. I have started saying I am one. Come and separate those two again, slowly, because I cannot do it from in here.
You know all of it
Jesus, you know. You know all of it. I am still here.
When I cannot forgive myself
You have forgiven me and I have not. I do not know how to hand this over. Take it a little at a time, if that is what it takes. I am tired of being the one who keeps the case against myself open.
When someone else’s verdict stuck
For what a parent said, or a partner leaving, or a message that was never answered. Somebody made a judgement about you, and you have been living inside it ever since.
What they said about me
Lord, they said it once and I have repeated it a thousand times since. I do not know any more whether it was true. You were there. You know what is actually true about me. Tell me that, slowly, because I cannot see straight from where I am.
When they chose to go
They chose to go. I keep turning that into a sentence about what I am. Sit with me in the actual loss instead, and keep me from making it mean more than it means.
Angry, and saying so
I am angry. Not sad, angry. They took something from me, walked off with it and are fine. I am bringing that to you rather than swallowing it again. You take it. I do not know what else to do with it.
When work was who you were
Redundancy, being passed over, a business that did not work. You already know that a person is not their output. You have not believed it since the email arrived.
The morning after the email
God, there is nothing in the diary. I built who I am on being useful, and someone has taken the useful part away. Be here in the hours I do not know how to fill, and help me make the calls I need to make today.
Learning to be unproductive
I do not know how to be a person who is not producing something. Teach me. Start slowly. I am not good at this.
Another application, another silence
No reply again. Keep me from reading a rejection as a verdict on my whole life, God. Give me something to eat and someone to talk to today, and enough steadiness to send the next one.
Passed over one more time
God, it went to someone else again. I am tired of being the one who is nearly enough.
For someone who cannot see it
For a friend, a child or a partner who talks about themselves in a way you cannot bear to hear. You have tried arguing them out of it. It did not work. If you are frightened they might not be safe, ask them straight out. Then do not carry the answer alone. Tell their doctor today, and use the help at the top of this page, which is there for people worried about someone else too.
For someone who cannot hear me
Nothing I say gets in. I have tried, and it slides straight off them. Get in where I cannot reach. Give them one hour today when the voice is quieter, and give me the patience to keep turning up without a speech.
For my child tonight
Lord, my child does not think they are worth much, and I do not know when that started. I cannot climb inside their head. Please go there. Let them hear the truth from someone they will actually believe.
When I am frightened for them
I am scared for them. Keep them here, God. Put people around them who notice, and give me the nerve to ask the direct question rather than hoping.
Bible verses about identity and worth
What each passage meant where it was written, and what it does and does not offer you now.
God saw everything that he had made, and, behold, it was very good.
Genesis 1:26–31
This is the verdict at the end of the sixth day, before anybody had achieved anything or failed at anything. It falls on the whole made world, people included, purely because God made it. So it is not a compliment about your qualities and it does not move with your week. It is the assessment you were born into and did not earn.
For you formed my inmost being. You knit me together in my mother’s womb.
Psalm 139:13–18
The most quoted verse on this subject, and the most flattened. The psalm is not a poem about self esteem. It is a man working out that there is nowhere he can go where God is not already there, and finding that both unnerving and steadying. The point is not that you are impressive. It is that you were made on purpose, by someone who has never once lost track of you.
Behold, I have engraved you on the palms of my hands.
Isaiah 49:14–16
Zion has just said out loud that God has forgotten her. God does not correct the feeling, he answers it. The image is deliberately physical, something cut into skin that cannot be wiped off, and it was written to a people in exile who had every reason to think they had been dropped. It is a reply to abandonment, not a reward for good behaviour.
This is my beloved Son, with whom I am well pleased.
Matthew 3:13–17
Notice when this is said. Jesus has preached nothing, healed nobody and gathered no one. The approval comes before the work, not because of it. If your sense of yourself is welded to what you deliver, this is the passage to sit with, because it puts the order the other way round. Loved first, then sent.
Where these verses get misused
If the voice has moved on to telling you the world would be better without you, do not sit with that on your own today. Tell a doctor or a crisis line, and use the help at the top of this page. That is not a failure of faith. Verses about being wonderfully made get handed to people at speed, often to close a conversation rather than open one. Be wary when identity language is used to skip past something real. If you have lost a job, been treated badly, or done actual harm, being told you are a new creation does not deal with the loss, the injury, or what you owe someone. Worth and responsibility are different questions and both need room.
Questions people ask
- Why don’t verses about my worth make me feel any different?
- Because feeling is not the mechanism. A verse is a statement about what is the case, not a switch you flick. Shame is usually laid down over years, often by somebody with a loud voice and a lot of access to you, and one reading does not undo that. Say the words anyway, on the days you believe them and the days you do not. The believing tends to arrive later, unevenly, and often through other people.
- Is feeling worthless a sin, or a sign of weak faith?
- No. Scripture is full of people who could not see any value in their own lives and said so to God directly, and they are not told off for it. Low self worth is far more often an injury than a rebellion. It can also be a symptom of depression, which is a medical matter and is treatable. Praying about it and getting it looked at are not competing options, and doing both is not a lack of trust.
- How do I pray when I do not think God likes me?
- Plainly, and say that part out loud. You are allowed to open with the accusation. A prayer that begins with I do not think you want to hear from me is still a prayer, and it is more honest than performing a warmth you do not feel. If even that is too much, stay quiet and stay put. Presence without words counts. Many people find borrowed words easier at that point, which is part of why written prayers exist.
- What if the thing I am ashamed of is something I actually did?
- Then two things are true and you need both. Confess it, to God, and to a priest if your tradition has that, and, where it is safe and right, to the person you harmed, and do what repair is possible. That is a real obligation and no amount of identity language dissolves it. But guilt is about what you did, while shame tells you what you are, and shame is the part that keeps you from putting anything right. Being forgiven is meant to free you to act, not to close the subject.
Pick one prayer, the shortest one that fits, and say it out loud once before you put this down. Out loud matters more than you would expect, because it puts a second voice in the room. Then go and do the next ordinary thing. Eat something. The voice can wait.
