Prayers for when you are exhausted
Not tired in a way an early night would fix. These prayers assume you have nothing left, and ask nothing of you.
You have had early nights. You slept nine hours on Tuesday and still could not face the stairs.
This is the tiredness that sits underneath everything. It makes small tasks enormous and it makes you short with people you love. For some it comes from months of caring for someone who is not getting better. For some it is a job that keeps asking. Sometimes it arrives with no reason you can name, which is frightening in its own way.
The prayers come first here, because if you are this tired you should not have to read an essay before you get to one. They are short. Most of them can be said lying down.
18 prayers on this page, and 9 Bible passages with notes on what they mean.
When you wake up already tired
For the first hour, when the tiredness is there before anything has happened and the day is already waiting for you with its list.
Before I have even started
It is morning, God, and I am already finished. Nothing has happened yet and I have nothing. I will not dress it up for your benefit. This is me. Here.
Nothing to ask for today
I am not asking for anything today. I am just telling you where I am.
Enough for the next hour
Lord, I cannot see past this morning. Give me enough for the next hour and let the rest of the day wait its turn. If something has to be dropped today, show me which thing, and let me drop it without a fight.
When resting feels like failing
Somewhere I learned that stopping is laziness. You made a body that runs out. Help me believe that lying down is not a betrayal of anyone, and let me rest without arguing with myself the whole time I am doing it.
In the middle of the night
For three in the morning, when you are awake and nothing can be fixed at this hour, or you are on your feet again with someone who needs you.
Awake again at three
It is dark and I am awake and my mind will not stop turning it over. Nothing is going to be solved at this hour. Keep watch while I lie here. Let the morning come.
Too tired to sleep
God, I am so tired I cannot sleep. Hold this night.
On my feet in the dark
I am up again and nobody sees it. You do, Lord. Steady my hands. Keep the last of my patience from running out before it gets light.
Putting the day down
I am putting this day down now, unfinished. The things I did not do are still not done, and they will stay undone tonight. They are yours. I am going to sleep.
When you are caring for someone
For the tiredness that comes from months of looking after another person, when there is no end date and nobody has offered to take a turn.
For the one I look after
God, keep them. Ease whatever can be eased for them today. And when I have run out of gentleness, do not let that be the thing they remember of me.
The part I do not say out loud
I love them and today I do not want to be the one doing this. I am ashamed of that and I am telling you anyway, because you knew before I said it. Do not let this tiredness turn me hard.
When no one is coming
I have asked for help and none came. Send me somebody with hands. And if nobody comes this week, sit with me in the kitchen at eleven at night while I do it again.
For a break I cannot see
Show me the person to ask, or the number to ring, or the one thing I am allowed to stop doing. I need a proper break and I cannot work out how to get one. I cannot think it through on my own.
When you are angry about it
For when the tiredness has curdled into resentment, at the situation, at the people who are not helping, or at God for letting it run this long.
Angry and praying anyway
I am angry. I am praying angry because it is this or nothing. You can take it, and I am not going to tidy myself up first.
This is not fair
God, other people are getting on with their lives and I cannot manage the stairs. I do not accept it. I am telling you plainly and I am not sorry.
When they say to pray harder
I have been told this would lift if I believed better. I do not think you work like that. I am tired, not faithless. Speak or stay quiet, but stay.
For someone else running on empty
For a partner, a friend, a colleague or a parent who is past the point of coping, when you can see it clearly and they will not admit it.
For a friend who is burnt out
God, they are running on nothing and they keep saying they are fine. Give them one person who sees it. Give them a day where nothing is asked of them. And show me something practical to do rather than a thing to say.
For someone who will not stop
They will not put it down. Make rest attractive to them. Take away the fear that everything collapses if they sit still for one afternoon.
A prayer I have no words for
God, you know the state they are in. I have nothing else. Please.
Bible verses about rest and weariness
What each passage meant where it was written, and what it does and does not offer you now.
Come to me, all you who labour and are heavily burdened, and I will give you rest.
Matthew 11:28–30
Jesus says this to people worn down by religious obligation, in a world where a teacher's demands were called a yoke. It is the most quoted line on this subject and the most often turned into a test, as though still being tired proved you had not come properly. He offers rest to people who are already carrying too much, and asks nothing of them first.
Come away into a deserted place, and rest awhile.
Mark 6:30–32
The apostles have just come back from working, and the crowds are so constant that they cannot even eat. Jesus does not tell them to push on, and he does not tell them to pray about their tiredness. He tells them to get in a boat and go. Stopping was his instruction, not their weakness. The work they left was good work.
He looked, and behold, there was at his head a cake baked on the coals, and a jar of water. He ate and drank, and lay down again.
1 Kings 19:1–8
Elijah has come off the biggest day of his life, is being hunted, and asks God to let him die. What arrives is not a rebuke and not a vision. It is sleep, then food, then more sleep, then food again. Nobody argues with him and nobody tells him he should not feel it. Part of what he needed was a fed body and a rested one, and God started there. If you are that far past the end of your strength, this is permission to eat something and lie down. And if you have found yourself wanting your life to end, as he did, that part is not for carrying alone. Tell your GP, or one person you trust, today, and say it as plainly as he said it.
He gives power to the weak. He increases the strength of him who has no might.
Isaiah 40:28–31
Where these verses get misused
Verses about rest get handed out as instructions. People are told that if the yoke is easy and they are still crushed, they must be carrying something they were never given, or praying wrongly, or lacking faith. That is not what these passages say and it is not true of you. Exhaustion can be grief, overwork, an untreated illness, a thyroid problem, depression, or simply too much for too long. Prayer does not replace a doctor, a rota, a diagnosis or a week off. Say the prayer, and also make the appointment.
Questions people ask
- Is it wrong to be too tired to pray?
- No. Nothing here sets a minimum. Elijah at his lowest prayed a request to die, and what he got back was food and sleep. If words are beyond you, the prayers on this page are short on purpose and one sentence counts. Sitting in silence counts. Meaning to pray and falling asleep before you manage it counts too.
- Why has God not taken the tiredness away?
- We do not know, and anyone who tells you the specific reason for your exhaustion is guessing. Paul asked three times for something to be removed and it stayed. What these passages show, over and over, is presence and practical provision rather than instant fixing: bread, sleep, someone holding your arms up, a boat away from the crowd. That is not the answer most people want. It is the one that keeps turning up.
- If his burden is light, am I doing something wrong?
- Almost certainly not. That line describes what Jesus asks of you, not the total weight of your life. A person can be walking with God faithfully and still be flattened by a sick parent, a night shift rota, or an illness nobody has diagnosed yet. The verse was never meant as a measuring device for how tired you are allowed to be.
- How do I pray when I cannot concentrate?
- Shorten it and repeat it. One line, said again whenever it comes back to you, is a very old way of praying and it survives brain fog. Say it while the kettle boils or while you are washing up. If your mind wanders, that is not failure, it is tiredness. Come back to the same line and start again.
- Is burnout a spiritual problem?
- It can have a spiritual dimension, but treating it only as one is how people stay ill for years. Persistent exhaustion has physical causes worth ruling out, including anaemia, thyroid problems, sleep apnoea, and depression. Book the blood test. Tell your GP how long it has gone on and how bad it is. Praying and being investigated properly are not in competition.
Pick one prayer. Say it out loud once, badly, without tidying it up. Then put the phone down and do the smallest restful thing available in the next ten minutes, even if that is sitting on the edge of the bed with your shoes off. That is enough for now.
