The rich rule over the poor. The borrower is servant to the lender.

Proverbs 22:7

This is an observation about how power works, from a collection of sayings, not a verdict on your character. Anyone who has sat on hold to a creditor knows it is accurate. It gets quoted at people to shame them, when what it actually names is an imbalance, which is why the law codes elsewhere go on to restrict what a lender is allowed to do.

In all hard work there is profit, but the talk of the lips leads only to poverty.

Proverbs 14:23

Proverbs are general truths, not guarantees, and this one is used cruelly, as though everyone in debt talked their way there. The contrast is between doing the work and merely discussing it. It is not a claim that effort always pays out, and it is not a diagnosis of anyone on a low wage, a failed contract or a long illness.

At the end of every seven years, you shall cancel debts.

Deuteronomy 15:1–11

Israel's law put an expiry date on debt between neighbours, and the same passage forbids a lender to refuse a poor neighbour a loan on the grounds that the year of release is near. Whatever you make of applying it now, it is worth knowing that the Bible's most detailed debt legislation is about release rather than about extracting the final payment. That is almost never the verse quoted at people who owe money.

If he is a poor man, you shall not sleep with his pledge.

Deuteronomy 24:10–15

A creditor had to wait outside the house rather than walk in and choose what to take, and had to return a poor man's cloak by nightfall so he could sleep in it. The law is protecting the borrower's dignity, and quite literally his rest. If you are being hounded, this tradition is standing beside you, not behind the person doing the hounding.

Go, humble yourself. Press your plea with your neighbour.

Proverbs 6:1–5

Written to someone who has guaranteed another person's loan and is now caught by it. Notice what it does not say. It does not say wait and see. It says lose sleep over it, get up, go to the person, and negotiate hard and urgently, like an animal working itself free of a snare. Praying about debt is not the opposite of that. It is what you do on the way there.

Therefore don’t be anxious for tomorrow, for tomorrow will be anxious for itself. Each day’s own evil is sufficient.

Matthew 6:19–34

This is not an instruction to feel calm, and hearing it that way just adds guilt about worrying on top of the worry. Jesus says each day has enough trouble in it, which concedes that the trouble is real. Earlier in the same passage he says your Father knows what you need. He does not promise a particular sum by Friday, and neither will we.

For which of you, desiring to build a tower, doesn’t first sit down and count the cost, to see if he has enough to complete it?

Luke 14:28–30

Usually served up as business advice, and it does describe a real risk. But Jesus is talking about the cost of following him, and the ones doing the mocking in the story are onlookers, not God. If your build stopped halfway, this is not the crowd's verdict on you. It is a call to be honest with yourself about what a thing will cost before you start it.

Owe no one anything, except to love one another; for he who loves his neighbour has fulfilled the law.

Romans 13:7–8

Often used to argue that every loan and every mortgage is sin. Read the sentence just before it: pay your taxes, your customs, your respect, your honour. Paul is telling people to settle what is genuinely due, then turning the word owe around to say the one debt that never clears is love. It is a rule about paying up, not a ban on borrowing.

Behold, the wages of the labourers who mowed your fields, which you have kept back by fraud, cry out; and the cries of those who reaped have entered into the ears of the Lord of Armies.

James 5:1–6

Aimed at wealthy employers who held back the pay of the men who cut their fields. If you are the one not being paid, or paid late by a company that could pay you tomorrow, this passage takes your side and it is loud about it. If you are the one sitting on an invoice you could settle this week, it is asking about that too.

Questions people ask

Is it a sin to be in debt?

The Bible treats debt as serious and often as dangerous, but it does not treat the debtor as a criminal. Romans 13 is about paying what is genuinely due, and moves straight on to love. Meanwhile the law in Deuteronomy builds in release, protects the borrower's dignity and tells creditors what they may not do. If owing money were simply sin, none of that protection would make sense. Borrowing recklessly can be wrong. Being in debt is a situation, not a verdict on you.

Will God clear my debt if I pray hard enough?

We cannot tell you that, and anyone who does is guessing. People pray and money arrives, through work, a relative, a write-off. People pray just as honestly and still go through insolvency. Prayer is not a mechanism for producing a figure. What Matthew 6 says is that your Father knows what you need, which is not the same as a promise that a specific amount lands on a specific date. Pray for the money. Also do the paperwork.

How do I pray when the debt is my own fault?

Say so, plainly, without the long preamble. Confession is shorter than most people expect and it does not require you to perform how bad you feel. Then notice what Scripture does next. Proverbs 6 tells the man who guaranteed someone else's loan to get up, go to his neighbour and press his plea, not to lie awake in shame. Remorse that stops you ringing the creditor is not repentance. It is fear wearing repentance as a coat.

Should I keep giving to church when I cannot pay my bills?

Churches teach this differently and we are not going to settle it for you here. What we will say plainly is that the generosity passages in Proverbs and Deuteronomy are largely addressed to people with something spare, and their purpose is protecting the poor, not extracting from them. If someone is pressing you to give money you need for rent or food, and calling that faith, that is not what those texts are doing. Talk to your own minister and be honest about the numbers.

What do I pray about a business that is failing?

Pray about the specific people. The staff, the suppliers who will not be paid in full, the person at home who has watched you carry it. Pray about the version of yourself you thought you would be by now, because that grief is real and usually goes unnamed. Then get insolvency advice early, while options still exist. Luke 14 gets thrown at people whose business failed, as though collapse proved they never counted the cost. It says no such thing.
