Praying for a Friend Who Just Got a Hard Diagnosis

The phone call still feels unreal
You hung up ten minutes ago and you still have not moved. Your friend said the word out loud, cancer, or something nearly as heavy, and now you are staring at your phone trying to work out what to pray. Not later. Now. You want to do something with your hands and your voice feels useless.
This is common and it does not mean you are bad at this. Praying for someone you love who has just been handed frightening news is hard even for people who have done it a hundred times.
What to actually ask for
Start smaller than you think you need to. You do not have to produce a theologically complete prayer in the first five minutes. You can ask God to be near your friend tonight. You can ask for the people around them, the doctors, the nurses, the person who draws blood badly and the one who does it well. You can ask for sleep, for appetite, for one good hour in a day that otherwise has none.
You can ask for healing. That is not wrong. The Psalms are full of people asking for exactly that, plainly, without dressing it up.
Heal me, O Jehovah, and I shall be healed; save me, and I shall be saved: for thou art my praise.
Jeremiah 17:14
That is a direct request made by someone in real trouble, not a formula. You can pray it for your friend. You can also pray the longer version, the one that admits how bad things feel while still asking:
Jehovah will support him upon the couch of languishing: Thou makest all his bed in his sickness.
Psalm 41:1-3
Notice what that psalm does not say. It does not say the sickness will end a certain way. It pictures God present in the sickbed itself, not only on the other side of recovery. That is a prayer you can actually pray honestly, because it does not require you to know how this ends.
Ask for your friend's mind too. Decisions are coming, about treatment, about who to tell, about how much to explain to their kids. Ask for clear thinking in rooms full of unfamiliar words. Ask for good doctors and trust between your friend and the people treating them. Prayer sits alongside medicine here, it does not compete with it or replace it.
